Finding A Place

Your First Rental in Canada: A Simple Checklist Moving into your first place in Canada can feel exciting… and a little scary. Don’t worry. You don’t need to know everything at once. You just need a simple plan. Here’s a clear checklist to help you get started.

✅ 1. Know What You Can Afford

Before you start looking:

  1. Decide how much rent you can pay every month

  2. Remember: you may need first and last month’s rent

  3. Keep some money for utilities and internet too

  4. Simple rule: don’t choose a place that makes you stressed every month.

✅ 2. Prepare Your Basic Documents

Most landlords may ask for:

  • Your ID

  • Proof of income or job offer (if you have one)

  • References (if available)

  • Sometimes a credit report (don’t panic if you don’t have one yet)

No credit yet? That’s normal for newcomers. Some landlords will still rent to you.

✅ 3. Check the Place Before You Say Yes

When you visit:

  • Check water, lights, and heating

  • Look for any damage

  • Ask what is included (heat, water, parking, laundry)

  • Ask when you can move in

If something looks wrong, ask questions. It’s okay.

✅ 4. Understand What You’re Signing

Before you sign anything:

  • Read the lease

  • Check the rent amount and move-in date

  • Ask how rent is paid (e-transfer, cheque, etc.)

  • Ask about rules (pets, guests, noise)

If you don’t understand something, ask. No shame. Ever.

✅ 5. After You Get the Keys

Now the fun (and small stress 😅) begins:

  • Set up electricity, internet, and phone

  • Buy only what you really need first

  • Take photos of the place (just in case)

  • Keep your lease and receipts safe

💡 Small Reminder

Your first home in Canada doesn’t have to be perfect.
It just has to be safe, affordable, and comfortable.

You can always upgrade later.
